There are 670 million people, mostly in the developing world, who are blind or visually impaired because they do not have access to an eye examination and a pair of glasses. Despite the best efforts of civil society, governments and the private sector, current efforts will not be able to achieve the targets we set for VISION 2020. In order to make significant gains a realistic appraisal of current efforts, up-scaling of services and the development of new approaches need to be explored and developed whilst being cognizant of regional and national challenges.
The refractive error course addressed the challenge above by focusing on aspects of human resources, service delivery models, technology and innovation, research and public-private partnerships.
