In recent years much attention has been paid in the health development literature to the need to strengthen health systems to ensure sustainable and equitable health care delivery. Health System Strengthening has become a cornerstone for both national government and donor community policy.
The symposium introduced participants to the importance of health systems, with a description of the World Health Organization’s health systems framework. Some of the pitfalls of bypassing national health systems were highlighted. Examples of health systems research were presented followed by examples of how the findings of this kind of research can be applied to the health workforce. The important role of policy development and implementation were also outlined.
