Dr Tony Ukety delivered the “Mectizan Donation Programme 25th Anniversary Lecture” on the third day of the Assembly, on "Onchocerciasis Control and Elimination: Lessons Learnt and Opportunities for Collaboration”. Dr Ukety reviewed the history of Onchocerciasis control in Africa and Latin America, and highlighted the fact that success seems likely because of the strong partnerships between the various groups involved – donors, NGOs, UN agencies, governments and the local communities. Stressing the fact that Onchocerciasis could be eliminated if these partnerships are strengthened, Dr Ukety urged for greater participation and advocacy at the community level.
Since 1987 the free donation of Mectizan – as much as needed and for as long as needed – has revolutionised the fight against onchocerciasis (river blindness).
