We are thrilled to highlight the remarkable achievements of Instituto Suel Abujamra (ISA) an IAPB member organization through its pioneering initiative, Aldeia em Foco (Village in Focus). Developed with the support of IDB Lab and the L’Occitane Foundation, this project is transforming eye care access across Brazil by combining portable diagnostic equipment, artificial intelligence, and teleophthalmology to reach remote indigenous communities.

Through a scalable and decentralized care model, Aldeia em Foco brings high-quality ophthalmic care directly to hard-to-reach areas.

Key Achievements & Impact to Date:

  • Over 27,000 eye screenings conducted.
  • More than 17,000 eyeglasses donated, featuring immediate assembly on-site for monofocal needs.
  • Over 5,500 referrals made to the local public healthcare system for medium and high-complexity procedures.
  • Reached over 100 indigenous villages across 10 Brazilian states and supported 8 Special Indigenous Health Districts (DSEIs).
  • 3,487 individuals trained to strengthen local care capabilities.

The project’s innovative approach has gained international recognition, earning distinguished accolades such as the Innovation Team Award (Experimentation category) from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Best Presentation Award at the World Association of Eye Hospitals (WAEH) Congress.

We extend our warm congratulations to the entire team at Instituto Suel Abujamra for their dedicated work, commitment, and drive to democratize eye health and make quality vision care a reality for indigenous communities in Brazil.
