MembershipFew interventions in global development pay off as reliably as a pair of glasses. Correcting a child’s vision early can boost their lifetime earnings by as much as 78%, making it one of the most cost-effective investments in a child’s future. It is why Love Your Eyes belongs in the same conversation as school meal programmes and vaccination drives: not because it is heartwarming, but because it works.
Now, new IAPB analysis builds on that finding, identifying 23 countries where a child’s lifetime earnings could double if eye problems are detected early and corrected with quality spectacles throughout their school years.
The reason is simple. Uncorrected refractive error is the leading cause of vision impairment in children, affecting 17.8 million young people aged 5 to 17 worldwide. Children with poor vision learn only around half as much as their classmates with good eyesight, creating a learning gap that can limit educational achievement, productivity and future opportunities.
But when vision problems are identified early and children receive the glasses they need, the benefits compound year after year. A child who can see the board clearly, read their books and fully participate in the classroom is better positioned to keep pace with learning, complete their education and reach their full potential.
The Love Your Eyes campaign continues to highlight the evidence behind this powerful intervention, demonstrating that the return on investment is both measurable and achievable within a single school generation. Through the new Love Your Eyes at School package, teachers, parents and caregivers have access to practical resources that help bring eye health education into classrooms and homes.
Partners are already putting these tools into action. In Kenya, Operation Eyesight has screened more than 45,000 children across Kajiado and Nandi counties, with programmes now expanding into Narok County. Before screenings take place, learners and teachers participate in eye health awareness sessions using Love Your Eyes Kids materials, helping children understand the importance of eye care before they receive any necessary correction.
Alongside improving access to sight tests and glasses, the campaign is also addressing one of the less visible barriers to good vision: stigma. Helping children feel confident wearing glasses is what transforms a positive diagnosis into a lasting outcome. The moment a child chooses to wear their spectacles every day is the moment the long-term benefits begin to take shape.
To spread that message further, IAPB is working with partners across Africa, China and Australia to bring these findings to mainstream consumer media. The campaign aims to show parents that a simple eye test could be one of the best investments they can make in their child’s future, while encouraging governments to ensure every child has access to sight tests and glasses. The media outreach will also extend across the United States, Canada and Europe ahead of World Sight Day.
For millions of children, better vision is about much more than seeing clearly today. It is about unlocking learning, opportunity and a brighter future for decades to come.
