IAPB’s 10th General Assembly (10GA), the premier global event discussing public health issues related to blindness and visual impairment, was held in Durban, South Africa from 27-30 October 2016.
The Opening Ceremony, on the 27th featured a powerful speech by the keynote speaker Her Excellency Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the President of Liberia. She noted that poor countries continue to bear more than their fair share of the health burden and described her own country’s heroic efforts to manage the Ebola outbreak.
The Celebration Ceremony on the 30th October ended with some moving speeches; the announcement of the winners of the #StrongerTogether Photo Competition and felicitation of the Eye Health Heroes 2016. The venue of the next IAPB General Assembly in 2020 was also announced by IAPB President Bob McMullan.
