SESSION: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development – a powerful lever for eye health?

Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 is an enormous global challenge and will only be achieved with the conscientious inclusion of eye care. In this session attendees will learn how the SDGs are a critical opportunity to unlocking political will and financing and workshop how to maximise this potential and turn commitment into action.

This session will explore:

  • ‘Quick-wins’ and leverage points for advancing eye health within the SDGs.
  • Key stakeholders in the development sector and opportunities to mobilise these important networks.
  • Prioritising critical actions and next steps at global, regional and national levels.
  • Setting benchmarks and areas of action for accelerating the SDGs within your organisation.

SESSION: Unpacking the WHO Guide for Action – WHO Session

Integrated people-centred eye care (IPEC) is the answer to many of the eye health sector’s challenges – meeting the growing need, dealing with demographic and lifestyle changes that impact eye health, scaling up services and tackling inequality of care. In this session, delivered by WHO, attendees will get a first in-depth overview of the much-anticipated Guide for Action and explore the role of the eye care sector in its implementation.

This session will explore:

  • The WHO Guide for Action – a comprehensive guide to assist countries through a process of situation assessment; strategic planning; monitoring and evaluation; and implementation.
  • How IPEC requires a fundamental shift in the way eye care services are managed and delivered.
  • How eye health be integrated into national health systems.

SESSION: Working with the private sector to deliver affordable eye care

The private sector plays a key role to achieving affordable eye care for all. Using examples of successful partnerships, this session will explore extending partnership strategies to tackle eye disease as well sustainability, affordability, accessibility and market barriers. Attendees will also learn how partners can work together to develop sustainable business models to ensure the 1.1 billion are not left behind.

This session will explore:

  • How to identify and approach mutually beneficial partnerships that leverage strengths, networks, reputations, skills, resources and funding.
  • How ‘third sector’ and private partners can work together and develop sustainable business models.
  • Effective integration systems, consumer-centric models and integrated people-centred eye care concepts to overcome market inefficiencies.

SESSION: The power of business to deliver change for eye health

The workplace can play an important role in eye health, or example, delivering employee education schemes, implementing prevention measures and providing sight tests and glasses as part of employee health benefits. Supporting eye health allows employers to take an active role in not only their employees wellbeing but also as a tool to unlock productivity and business growth.

This session will explore:

  • How to convince business and industry leaders the advantages of prioritising employee eye health.
  • The role of eye health in company strategies by bringing business leaders and the eye care sector together for a thoughtful discussion.
  • The main challenges and barriers to providing employee eye health schemes.
  • Feasible solutions and opportunities to addressing eye health in the workplace.

SESSION: Technology & Innovation = Access & Impact

The opportunity to shape how technology will impact the future of eye health is now. The pandemic forced an uptake of technology, and it is time to build on those lessons and ensure innovations improve access for the hardest to reach. In this session attendees will gain an understanding of thoughtful technology applications and learn how technology, like artificial intelligence, will improve coverage, efficiency and ensure all populations benefit from innovation.

This session will explore:

  • The use of technology in eye health to improve access to care.
  • Prioritising current challenges that can be addressed with technology.
  • How to increase equitability by incentivising the sharing of technology.

SESSION: Mobilising demand

Eye health is a universal issue, but public appreciation of its importance continues to lag against other health interventions. Awareness campaigns to educate against negative stereotypes and misconceptions are important to influence and activate the public to demand and prioritise eye health and drive systemic change. In this session attendees will explore instigating behavioural change using communications strategies.

This session will explore:

  • Different communications activations, from grassroots empowerment to global digital campaigns.
  • Strategies and techniques used across different sectors to influence behaviour, attitudes, policy and how they mobilise demand.
  • The various elements that comprise a communications campaign and how to put them together to build an effective campaign.

A Regional Action Workshop: Integrated People Centred Eye Care Introductory Materials

Where do you start when implementing Integrated People-centred Eye Care (IPEC) in health systems? In this workshop attendees will learn from recent, real country examples about how they can use and adapt materials developed for use at a national level to their context.

At this workshop participants will join delegates from their WHO region to:

  • Better understand IPEC and how to initiate discussions and leverage opportunities.
  • Better understand the suite of IPEC tools.
  • Foster cross-regional co-operation and learning.

This workshop is for individuals at all levels and skillsets, from CEOs to Country Managers, Ministry of Health representatives or individual practitioners – attend and join our multi-regional network of advocates for IPEC.

SESSION: People at the centre of eye care

Persuading individuals and communities to make eye health a priority requires relevant, appropriate and meaningful engagement that puts their needs at the centre of how care is offered and delivered. In this session, attendees will learn about people-centred care and how to consider the various requirements of consumers, patients and communities over the next 10 years.

This session will explore:

  • Trends, needs and profiles of eye health consumers now and in the years to come.
  • Application of people centred service design to eye care.
  • Strategies for engaging individuals and communities to be proactive with their eye health.
