Geographic Atrophy (GA): A Policy Brief for Action
1/1

Geographic Atrophy (GA) is an advanced form of dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD)and a growing cause of irreversible central vision loss among older adults. More than 5 million people are estimated to be living with GA globally and prevalence is projected to rise sharply as populations age1.

While advances in imaging, disease monitoring and treatment have improved management of GA, the condition continues to receive limited attention within eye health, ageing, disability and non-communicable disease (NCD) policy frameworks. Many people living with GA also continue to face barriers accessing diagnosis, rehabilitation, social support and, where available and applicable, treatment.

This brief provides an overview of the challenges associated with GA and sets out key policy actions to strengthen prevention, detection, rehabilitation, equitable care and healthy ageing responses. We would like to thank Prevent Blindness for their input in the development of the brief.
