The Nepal Eye Program (NEP) was officially launched in July 1992 to support the prevention and control of blindness in Nepal and beyond. Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology (TIO) is the implementing body of the NEP, a not-for-profit, community-based non-governmental organization. TIO facility was opened in 1994.
TIO is a Centre of Excellence in comprehensive quality eye care delivery, training, manufacturing high quality affordable Intra Ocular Lens, and research with sustainable growth.
TIO has developed the concept of District Community Eye Centre (DCEC) in order to create eye care facilities in different district of Nepal. The primary objective of DCEC is to provide comprehensive quality eye care services to the community at affordable costs to reduce district blindness and play a vital role in integrating eye care in primary health at district level.
TIO is also one of the members of the Apex Body for Eye Health, Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP), a high level coordinating policy making and implementing body signed up to the core values of VISION 2020 in Nepal.
