WHO – Global Initiative for the Elimination of Blindness

This document was produced following consultations held in Geneva during 1996 and 1997, convened by the WHO Programme for the Prevention of Blindness and Deafness (PBD) at the request of, and with support from, the Task Force of the Partnership Committee of Nongovernmental Development Organizations.
œ
The purpose of these meetings was to initiate the development of a global plan to enable all parties and individuals involved in combating blindness to work in a focused and coordinated way to achieve the common goal of eliminating all avoidable blindness. This would become the 'VISION 2020: The Right to Sight' initiative.
œ
The document outlines objectives, strategies, indicators and targets for service delivery of eye care, in order to eliminate blindness from the five most amenable causes of avoidable blindness at the time.
