A ‘low profile’ person, and very community-based, Ms Naomi Nsubuga nonetheless represents the cream of the East African optometry crop. Her hard work has made new refractive services available in Uganda, Kenya and Ethiopia. Since 2008, her BHVI team have helped open 14 vision centres in Tanzania, training the optometrists and staff to manage them. Her determination and passion has positively impacted the lives of more than 150,000 people in East Africa, supporting efforts to eliminate avoidable blindness, particularly due to uncorrected refractive error.
Ms Naomi Nsubuga was named as the Brien Holden Vision Institute’s Eye Health Hero at the IAPB 9th General Assembly in Hyderabad, 17-20 September 2012.
