2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: Voluntary National Review Template Letter

Sustainable Development Goals - IAPB
1/1

In 2015, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted the Resolution 70/1, Transforming our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This historic document lays out the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which aim to mobilize global efforts to end poverty, foster peace, safeguard the rights and dignity of all people, and protect the planet.

As part of its follow-up and review mechanisms, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development encourages member states to “conduct regular and inclusive reviews of progress at the national and sub-national levels, which are country-led and country-driven.” These voluntary national reviews (VNRs) serve as a basis for the regular reviews by the United Nation’s high-level political forum (HLPF). Regular reviews by the HLPF are to be voluntary, state-led, undertaken by both developed and developing countries, and involve multiple stakeholders.

The UN Resolution A/75/L.108 – Vision for Everyone; accelerating action to achieve the sustainable development goals enshrines eye health as part of the SDGs and as a vital contributor to the success of the 2030 Agenda. The resolution expressly encourages Member States to consider addressing the situation of eye health in their VNRs.

The letter template on VNRs is for the use of IAPB members and calls for countries to adopt a whole-of-government approach to vision and include eye health in their implementation of the SDGs at the national level. Including eye health in their VNRs will be a critical step towards fulfilling the commitment of ensuring vision for everyone and will support your broader efforts of achieving the SDGs by 2030.
