Drishyam is a unique collaboration of NGOs, optometrists, optometry colleges and corporates providing eye care to the needy. The goal of the Drishyam project is to conduct school eye screening and community eye screening in different cities of India.
Optometry isn’t a well-known profession in India where eye care service delivery has a huge shortage of human resources. This project aims at providing eye care services to school children and the community using an optometry centric comprehensive eye screening protocol.
Optometry Council of India (OCI) in collaboration with Ladies Circle India, Tangent India clubs and with support of Zeiss – Aloka has taken up this public health project. OCI has completed three screenings in March and April 2021.
The first screening was organised in Bangalore on 31st March. Students of Henk Bruna Swamy Vivekananda Round Table School, Hoskote were screened. The screening was conducted by optometrists from Sankara College of Optometry, Bangalore. Out of 110 students screened, spectacle prescription was given to 14 students, 9 students were referred to the base hospital,and 87 students required no intervention.
The second and third screening programs were conducted in Kolkata. Optometrists from Vidyanagar College of Optometry conducted the screenings on site. Children of The Rainbow Loretto Home, Kolkata was screened on 12th April. Out of the 100 students screened, spectacle prescription was given to 11 students, 25 students were referred to the base hospital, and 64 students required no intervention.
On 22nd April, the third screening was conducted in Rainbow Home, Tollygung Kolkata. Out of 70 screened, spectacle prescription was given to 15 students and 1 adult, 10 students were referred to the base hospital, and 44 individuals required no intervention.
All the spectacles were provided by Zeiss – Aloka.
