Eye Health Hero: Sri Ramaprasad Jeyaraj

Mr. Sri Ramaprasad Jeyaraj completed his Bachelor in Electronics and Communication Engineering at College of Engineering, Guindy in Chennai, INDIA in 2009 and got his MBA from Berlin School of Economics in 2011. After a brief stint at Olympus Germany, he returned to India and joined the product development division at Appasamy Associates.

He led the team to develop Multispot Photocoagulation 532nm Laser JERICHO and also improved the quality and reliability of the Single Spot 532nm Laser AMOGH SMART and other Solid State Lasers manufactured at Appasamy Associates. The team led by him has the credit of manufacturing the first commercial Multispot Photoablation Laser in India used for Diabetic Retinopathy and several other Retinal Diseases. This product has more than 900 installations across 20+ Developing Countries.

Currently, he heads the Research and Development Division at Appasamy Associates. His focus is on making user friendly, compact and optimised industrial design for automated alignment in measuring and imaging devices for the eye. He has built a multidisciplinary design and development team consisting of optical, electronics, mechanical and software engineers. Growing with the 532nm Laser Multispot Delivery Systems, his team has developed Diode Lasers for Glaucoma as well. The team also has refreshed the existing products like phacoemulsification, vitrectomy and non-contact tonometer.

Products from his team have made these technologies economically viable for doctors and hospitals in non-metro cities and rural areas in India as well as in Developing Countries thus making the treatment accessible to the under-privileged population in those regions. Apart from these products his team works on vertically integrating the entire product within the enterprise to make products economically viable for Developing Countries. Apart from the product development activities he liaisons with Researchers and Academic Institutions Worldwide for technology transfers and support commercialisation of new product ideas from their laboratories.
