Judge Imraan Gallo, Visually Impaired Photographer & Advocate for Artists with Disabilities, said of this year professional Photo of the Year, “The image encompasses the broader reach of eye health services to remote parts of the world. I’d put this image on the cover of a magazine because it truly represents that we should strive to provide these services to all.”

Judge Julie-Anne Davies, Professional Photographer & World Sight Day 2021 Photo Competition Winner, said of this year’s finalists, “Each image had substance either creatively or through the story they told, evoking emotion in the viewer and capturing our attention.”

Winners were selected from 960 images submitted from over 60 countries. Simon Darvill, Head of Communications and Campaigns, IAPB said “The success of this years’ photo competition reflects the significant leap in engagement we have seen for World Sight Day. It is staggering the way people have encompassed and celebrated World Sight Day like never before. The photo competition, that is always a highlight, has benefited from that exposure and the quality of submissions are second to none. I don’t envy the judges having to choose our winners from such a great selection.”

“Since its inception in 2015, the World Sight Day Photo Competition, supported by Bayer, has helped tell the story of eye care; the social and economic impact of having accessible, available and affordable eye care and the flip side. We are thrilled that so many photographers are keen to be part of helping tell that story. We sincerely thank everyone who participated and congratulations to our winners,” added Darvill.

The judging panel consisted of Caroline Casey, IAPB President, David Katz, Internationally Acclaimed Photojournalist & Founder the David Katz Foundation, Dean Saffron, World-Renowned Photojournalist, Dr Princess Ifeoma Ike, IAPB Eye Health Hero, Imraan Gallo, Visually Impaired Photographer & Advocate for Artists with Disabilities, Julie-Anne Davies, Professional Photographer & World Sight Day 2021 Photo Competition Winner, Marge Axelrad, Senior Vice President & Editorial Director, Vision Monday and VMail.

When asked to consider the importance of images that display and celebrate the impact of eye care, Judge, Caroline Casey replied, ‘It makes visible the issue that is a global blind spot.”
