Membership“Caring for sight is not just about prescribing glasses or performing surgeries. It is not that at all. It is about ensuring that a child can learn to read and thrive in school. It is about ensuring that a workerĀ remainsĀ able to support their family. It is about giving dignity and independence to our elderly.”
“If we invest smartly in eye health here in Brazil, we can prevent nearly 5 million people from losing their sight by the end of this decade. Furthermore, for every Real invested in this area, the return for our society is absolutely gigantic.”
– Senator Dr. Hiran Manuel GonƧalves da Silva.
The WHA79 side event in Geneva was a highly successful and impactful gathering, drawing strong engagement from WHO leadership, Member States, global health leaders, and partners. The event was distinguished by the presence of WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and Assistant Director-General Dr Jeremy Farrar, who joined in welcoming HRH The Duchess of Edinburgh. Co-sponsored by the UK and Malaysia, we were also joined by Antigua and Barbuda, the host country of the Global Summit. We also had leaders and representatives from Jordan, China, Bangladesh, Nigeria, and Tuvalu, and had a full room.
Discussions, interventions and panel contributions throughout the event reinforced strong momentum toward the first-ever Global Summit for Eye Health, and you can find a recording here. The success of the event was made possible through the incredible work of the IAPB team. It was also great to have the backing of Brazil, and we are delighted to share a short video of support from Brazil Global Summit Ambassador Senator Dr. Hiran Manuel GonƧalves da Silva. You can find more from Senator Dr. Hiran on his social media, including Facebook and Instagram.
