Peter Holland Visited Paraguay’s Minister of Health

Peter Holland, CEO of the IAPB, met with Paraguay’s Minister of Health. On Thursday, June 30, Peter Holland, Global CEO of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), visited Paraguay’s Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare and met with the Minister of Health, María Teresa Barán.

On behalf of the Ministry of Health, in addition to Dr. Barán, Dr. Adriana Amarilla, Director of International Relations, and Dr. Sofía Maldonado, Director of the National Eye Health Program, were also present. Mr. Holland was accompanied by Bruno Jaén Bohórques, President of Fundación Visión; Ryan Toews, CEO of Fundación Visión and Vice President of IAPB LATAM; and Cristina Sánchez, Regional Manager for Latin America at the IAPB.

During the meeting, Peter Holland delivered a copy of the official note sent by the government of Antigua and Barbuda. The document extends a formal invitation to the Minister to attend the 1st Global Eye Health Summit, an unprecedented event that will take place on November 2. In addition, on this occasion, he handed over the global research document on the Value of Investment in Eye Health, along with the specific report for Paraguay, so that the Minister could become fully acquainted with the details and scope of this important study.

In this prestigious global setting, Paraguay will be presented as one of the leading countries in Eye Health, and Dr. Barán will have the invaluable opportunity to address the summit. In her speech, she will share with the international community the strategies and the path taken that have allowed Paraguay to position itself as an undisputed leader and role model in the field of visual health.

Referring to this important milestone, the Minister of Health emphasized that this international positioning is no coincidence, but rather the result of sustained and coordinated work. In this regard, she highlighted the work of Fundación Visión Paraguay and the National Vision Committee (CONAVIP), pointing them out as major collaborators and key allies in enabling the country to become a regional benchmark in blindness prevention. This international recognition is backed by concrete milestones: Paraguay currently stands out as the only nation in the Americas to have conducted three national eye health surveys (RAAB) over ten-year intervals, generating vital scientific evidence to guide public policies that directly improve the population’s quality of life.

Peter Holland, CEO de IAPB, se reunió con la Ministra de Salud de Paraguay. El jueves 30 de junio, Peter Holland, CEO Global de la IAPB, visitó el Ministerio de Salud Pública y Bienestar Social de Paraguay y se reunió con la Ministra de Salud, María Teresa Barán.

Por parte del Ministerio de Salud, además de la Dra. Barán, estuvieron presentes la Dra. Adriana Amarilla, directora de Relaciones Internacionales, y la Dra. Sofía Maldonado, directora del Programa Nacional de Salud Ocular. Acompañaron al Sr. Holland: Bruno Jaén Bohórques, Presidente de Fundación Visión; Ryan Toews, CEO de la Fundación Visión y vicepresidente de IAPB LATAM; y Cristina Sánchez, Gerente Regional para Latinoamérica de la IAPB.

Durante la reunión, Peter Holland hizo entrega de una copia de la nota oficial enviada por el gobierno de Antigua y Barbuda. El documento extiende una invitación formal a la Ministra para asistir a la 1.ª Cumbre Mundial para la Salud Ocular, evento sin precedentes que se llevará a cabo el próximo 2 de noviembre. Además, en esta ocasión, se le hizo entrega del documento de la investigación global sobre el Valor de la Inversión en Salud Ocular, junto con el informe específico de Paraguay, con el objetivo de que la Ministra pueda conocer acabadamente los detalles y alcances de este importante estudio.

En este prestigioso escenario global, Paraguay será presentado como uno de los países líderes en Salud Ocular y la Dra. Barán tendrá la invaluable oportunidad de tomar la palabra ante la cumbre. En su intervención, compartirá con la comunidad internacional las estrategias y el camino recorrido que han permitido a Paraguay posicionarse como un indiscutible líder y modelo a seguir en el ámbito de la salud visual.

Al referirse a este importante hito, la Ministra de Salud enfatizó que este posicionamiento internacional no es casualidad, sino el fruto de un trabajo sostenido y articulado. En ese sentido, destacó especialmente la labor de la Fundación Visión Paraguay y del Comité Nacional de Visión (CONAVIP), señalándolos como grandes colaboradores y aliados fundamentales para lograr que el país se convierta en un referente regional en la prevención de la ceguera. Este reconocimiento internacional se sustenta en hitos concretos: Paraguay se destaca actualmente como la única nación de las Américas en haber realizado tres mediciones nacionales de salud ocular (RAAB) con una periodicidad de diez años, generando evidencia científica vital para orientar políticas públicas que mejoran directamente la calidad de vida de la población.
