Drs G N Rao and R D Ravindran are recipients of Sanford and Susan Greenberg Prize to End Blindness by 20/20

Thirteen doctors and researchers have won the Sanford and Sue Greenberg Prize to End Blindness and sharing the reward of three million dollars in gold. The winners were chosen based on the strength of their contributions to eliminate blindness, the ambitious aim set out by the prize organizers in 2012.

The prize is part of Greenberg’s life-long mission to prevent people from losing their sight. In February 1961, when he was a 20-year-old college student, he suddenly went blind due to glaucoma that had been misdiagnosed.

The recipients of the award in the ‘Outstanding Achievement Prize’ category include Dr Gullapalli N Rao,  Founder-Chair of the L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) and  Dr R D Ravindran, chair of the Aravind Eye Care System, organisation’s pioneering work providing free or affordable eye care to people in Tamil Nadu, India.
