MembershipThe Eastern Mediterranean Region continues to be a hub of dynamic activity in the fight against avoidable blindness and the promotion of comprehensive eye health. From extensive community outreach to cutting-edge technological advancements and multi-level capacity building, organizations across the region are demonstrating unwavering commitment to a shared vision.
Here are some remarkable efforts recently undertaken across the region:
Engaging Communities and Raising Awareness
Public awareness campaigns are a cornerstone of eye health initiatives throughout the EMR. In Kuwait, multiple campaigns focused on public education and outreach. Initiatives included health exhibitions for employees, science fairs for children, and school screenings for amblyopia. Workshops targeted the elderly, a dedicated campaign raised glaucoma awareness, and regular eye health advice was provided via Kuwait Radio.
In Saudi Arabia, King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KKESH&RC) has led several highly effective programs. During World Glaucoma Week in March 2025, a glaucoma screening campaign for craftspeople held special significance. This initiative recognized 2025 as the “Year of Handicrafts” in the Kingdom, underscoring the importance of protecting the vision of these skilled individuals. In collaboration with the Royal Institute of Traditional Arts, this preventive screening campaign specifically targeted craftspeople who benefited from the Royal Institute of Traditional Arts, promoting eye health awareness and encouraging early preventive eye screenings.
KKESH&RC also launched the “Fireworks Awareness Campaign: Zero Injuries”. This campaign aimed to raise community awareness about the serious harm and dangers fireworks pose, particularly to children, which can lead to severe eye injuries. Key objectives included educating visitors on eye safety risks, providing preventive tips for holidays, and highlighting the hospital’s role in health education and eye injury prevention.

These diverse and impactful initiatives across the region underscore a shared dedication to improving eye health outcomes and preventing avoidable blindness in the Eastern Mediterranean Region.
