Lanzamiento de la investigación: El Valor de la Visión: La Justificación de la Inversión, (The Value of Vision: The Case for Investment).

El documento “El Valor de la Visión: La Justificación de la Inversión, (The Value of Vision: The Case for Investment” fue lanzado en un evento oficial y paralelo a la 80ª Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas (UNGA 80).  Esta reunión organizada por La Agencia Internacional para la Prevención de la Ceguera (IAPB) y el Grupo de Amigos de la Visión de la ONU tuvo lugar el 24 de septiembre de 2025 en la Sede de las Naciones Unidas en Nueva York.

En este documento se menciona que se pudo comprobar que la inversión en soluciones sencillas, probadas y asequibles para la pérdida de visión es una de las mejores inversiones en salud pública y demuestra que invertir $7 mil millones de USD en salud ocular en países de ingresos bajos y medios (LMICs) entre 2026 y 2030 generará $199 mil millones de USD en beneficios económicos, lo que representa un retorno de la inversión de 1:28.

Esta alta rentabilidad se debe a los efectos positivos de una mejor visión en el desarrollo económico y social. El informe proyecta beneficios como un aumento en el empleo (generando $37 mil millones de USD) y una mayor productividad laboral (que asciende a $115 mil millones de USD). Además, la inversión en salud ocular mejora los resultados educativos (ganando 3.3 millones de años de escolaridad), reduce los accidentes de tráfico (evitando más de 5,800 muertes) y mejora la salud mental (previniendo 1.7 millones de casos de depresión). El caso de inversión también establece seis intervenciones “aceleradoras” prácticas, como el cribado comunitario y el aumento de la capacidad quirúrgica, necesarias para alcanzar estos beneficios.

Otro hito importante de esta reunión fue el anuncio de la Cumbre Global de Salud Ocular de 2026, la cual fue oficialmente anunciada por el Primer Ministro de Antigua y Barbuda, H.E. Sr. Gaston Browne, mencionando que será la primera cumbre de este tipo y se celebrará en St. John’s, Antigua, en noviembre de 2026 y servirá como una plataforma para asegurar hojas de ruta nacionales, financiación y rendición de cuentas sobre desarrollo económico salud ocular de los países.

Varios países y organismos manifestaron su apoyo al evento y aseguraron ya su presencia y también indicaron que iniciarán acciones concretas en salud ocular para un mayor desarrollo.

Launch of the research: The Value of Vision: The Case for Investment.

The document “The Value of Vision: The Case for Investment” was launched at an official event held in parallel with the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 80). This meeting, organized by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) and the UN Friends of Vision Group, took place on September 24, 2025, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

This document mentions that it has been proven that investing in simple, proven, and affordable solutions for vision loss is one of the best investments in public health and demonstrates that investing $7 billion USD in eye health in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) between 2026 and 2030 will generate $199 billion USD in economic benefits, representing a return on investment of 1:28.

This high return is due to the positive effects of improved vision on economic and social development. The report projects benefits such as increased employment (generating $37 billion) and higher labor productivity (amounting to $115 billion). In addition, investment in eye health improves educational outcomes (gaining 3.3 million years of schooling), reduces traffic accidents (preventing more than 5,800 deaths), and improves mental health (preventing 1.7 million cases of depression). The investment case also sets out six practical “accelerator” interventions, such as community screening and increased surgical capacity, that are necessary to achieve these benefits.

Another important milestone of this meeting was the announcement of the 2026 Global Eye Health Summit, which was officially announced by the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, H.E. Mr. Gaston Browne, mentioning that it will be the first summit of its kind and will be held in St. John’s, Antigua, in November 2026 and will serve as a platform to ensure national roadmaps, funding, and accountability for countries’ economic development and eye health.
