Magrabi Foundation conducted a population-based, cross-sectional survey using the standardized Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness with the addition of the Diabetic Retinopathy module in Sohag governorate, Upper Egypt in 2019. The study is the first of its type in Egypt.
The aim was to determine the prevalence and causes of blindness and vision impairment, the coverage and quality of cataract surgical services, the prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) and diabetic retinopathy (DR) among persons aged 50 years and older.
In the survey collection, we surveyed 4078 people aged 50 years and older in 68 clusters. The data collection and field work were completed in early 2020 and the findings have been recently published in two separate publications in BMJ. The first publication reflects the methodology, overall findings, and the second one is focused on DR findings.

It is our hope that the findings should help better plan for eye health services by the Ministry of Health and Population of Egypt. The study was funded by Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) and Magrabi Foundation.
