The Power of the Vision Atlas for Driving Action

Published: 08.09.2025

Robust, reliable data is central to advancing eye health and achieving global commitments such as 2030 In Sight and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Vision Atlas, developed by IAPB, provides a centralised platform that consolidates evidence from more than 60 trusted sources. It enables policymakers, programme leaders, and partners to translate data into action, monitor progress, and strengthen accountability.

Providing Clear Insights for Policymakers

Effective policy development requires access to timely and comparable evidence. The Vision Atlas presents country-level dashboards and harmonised indicators covering prevalence, causes of vision loss, service coverage, and progress toward the global eye health targets. By simplifying complex evidence into accessible and actionable insights, it equips decision-makers to:

  • Recognize eye health as a social, economic, and development priority.
  • Use evidence to make the case for investment and integration into health systems.
  • Mobilize resources and partnerships to scale up effective interventions.

Strengthening Accountability for 2030 In Sight

Aligned with the 2030 In Sight Strategy, the Vision Atlas functions as a monitoring and accountability mechanism. It highlights where commitments have been made, tracks integration of eye health within systems, and identifies areas requiring renewed attention. By providing transparency on progress at global, regional, and national levels, the platform enables stakeholders to assess performance, strengthen collective accountability, and ensure eye health remains a global health priority.

Centralising Data to Speak with One Voice

The Vision Atlas consolidates diverse data sources — including WHO reports (i.e ECSATs), RAAB surveys, the Vision Loss Expert Group, and the 2030 In Sight Progress Survey — into a unified evidence base. This centralisation ensures consistency, and strengthens the credibility of advocacy efforts. With a shared evidence platform, stakeholders can align strategies and speak with one voice on the importance of eye health.

Opportunities for Contribution

The Vision Atlas is a living resource that is regularly updated with new evidence, data, and case studies. Everyone involved in eye health, from researchers to community organisations, is invited to contribute. These contributions help fill gaps, improve the data available at both global and national levels, and make the platform more useful for policy, planning, and monitoring.

Sharing information is key to keeping the evidence base strong and shows our shared responsibility. By contributing data, using the dashboards, or applying the Atlas in advocacy and planning, partners help improve accountability and speed up progress towards universal eye health.

Conclusion

The Vision Atlas demonstrates the power of centralised, accessible data in driving evidence-informed action. By providing clear insights for policymakers, enabling accountability for 2030 In Sight, and fostering collaboration through a shared evidence base, it serves as a critical resource for advancing eye health globally. Its effectiveness depends on collective ownership and contribution. Continued engagement will ensure that the Vision Atlas remains an authoritative and actionable tool, supporting countries and partners to achieve universal access to eye care.Â
