Summit Visión y Óptica 2025: Llamado urgente para atender la salud visual en América Latina
El Summit Visión y Óptica 2025, celebrado celebrao en la Ciudad de México el pasado 25 y 26 de septiembre, reunió a lÃderes y especialistas de la región para debatir sobre el futuro de la salud visual. El evento se alineó con el lema global de IAPB, #LoveYourEyes, que promueve el acceso equitativo y asequible al cuidado ocular en todo el mundo.
Durante su participación, la Dra. Valeria Sánchez Huerta, Directora General del Hospital de la Ceguera APEC y Chair de la IAPB para América Latina, subrayó la urgencia de atender oportunamente la salud visual. Señaló que la ceguera no solo limita la autonomÃa individual, sino que también reduce la capacidad de las personas para generar ingresos y participar activamente en la economÃa.
La Dra. Sánchez advirtió además que el mundo enfrenta una crisis de salud pública en materia visual, que solo podrá resolverse mediante la colaboración inmediata entre gobiernos, instituciones médicas y sociedad civil.
El Summit reforzó la importancia de avanzar en la agenda de salud ocular de la región y de impulsar polÃticas públicas que garanticen un acceso universal a la atención visual. El llamado de la Dra. Sánchez refleja el compromiso de IAPB en América Latina de traducir la estrategia global 2030 In Sight en acciones concretas que impacten positivamente a las comunidades más vulnerables.
Vision and Optics Summit 2025: Urgent call to address visual health in Latin America
The Vision and Optics Summit 2025, held in Mexico City on September 25 and 26, brought together leaders and specialists from the region to discuss the future of visual health. The event aligned with the IAPB’s global slogan, #LoveYourEyes, which promotes equitable and affordable access to eye care worldwide.
During her participation, Dr. Valeria Sánchez Huerta, General Director of the APEC Blindness Hospital and Chair of the IAPB for Latin America, emphasized the urgency of addressing visual health in a timely manner. She pointed out that blindness not only limits individual autonomy, but also reduces people’s ability to generate income and actively participate in the economy.
Dr. Sánchez also warned that the world is facing a public health crisis in visual health, which can only be resolved through immediate collaboration between governments, medical institutions, and civil society.
The Summit reinforced the importance of advancing the region’s eye health agenda and promoting public policies that guarantee universal access to eye care. Dr. Sánchez’s call reflects the IAPB’s commitment in Latin America to translate the global 2030 In Sight strategy into concrete actions that positively impact the most vulnerable communities.
