As one of the world’s leading non-communicable diseases (NCDs), diabetes has fast become a global public health issue. Complications of diabetes are associated with premature death and can reduce lifespan by five to 15 years. Diabetic eye disease, a group of vision complications which includes diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, cataracts, and glaucoma, can lead to vision impairment and loss. Causes and challenges to diabetes management are multifactorial, and effective treatment requires an innovative, patient-centred multidisciplinary approach.

Prof. Tariq Aslam brings to this month’s conversation an extensive range of work in the field of ophthalmology, ranging from psychological aspects to the potential for technological enhancement of patient care.  Prof. Aslam gives us a status report on care for diabetes-related vision complications during COVID-19, and highlights the opportunities identified and adapted for quality care.

As part of the DR Barometer program, the Diabetes Alert! Series town halls aim to brings together key stakeholders to address gaps in patient awareness and education of diabetic eye diseases, as well as barriers to screening and treatment services, and identify opportunities to overcome them through collaborative and cross-sectoral partnerships.
