Strengthening capacities and technical acumen on Integrated People Centered Eye Care

Date: Tuesday, 31 August 2021

Time: 14:00 IST GMT+5:30

Background and Objectives: The World Health Organization has emphasized equitable health care since the late 1970s. In 2019, the WHO through its World Report on Vision advocated for Integrated People-Centered Eye Care (IPEC) so that people receive a continuum of health interventions covering promotion, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. It addresses the full spectrum of eye conditions according to their needs, coordinated across the different levels and sites of care within and beyond the health sector, and recognizes people as participants and beneficiaries of these services, throughout their life course. There is an urgent need to implement universal eye health in order to ensure comprehensive eye care to all without causing financial hardship”. The report could not have the planned country launches due to COVID and thus will benefit greatly by holding broad discussions.

Thrust Areas: The Webinar will familiarize the stakeholders with the concept and implementation of the IPCEC. It will illustrate with a case study: universal eye health implementation in one of the states of India with 42 million people. Thrust will be given on the action-points required to be taken in the member states to promote the topic in question.

Expected Outcomes:

  1. At the end of the session, the audience would have a better understanding of IPCEC and its central role in achieving the ‘Health for All’ by the year 2030 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
  2. Sensitized Programme managers will be able to advocate for IPEC in their countries and be better prepared with technical inputs.
  3. Universal eyecare strengthened with a reduction in out-of-pocket spending by the population.
