Sankara Nethralaya (Unit of Medical Research Foundation)

Sankara Nethralaya Medical Research Foundation

Sankara Nethralaya was established in 1978 by Dr. S. S. Badrinath to offer quality eye care services to the haves and have-nots regardless of their ability to pay. Our mission is to “Be the center of excellence in delivering total eye care for all and spreading knowledge through Education and Training and carrying India centric Research for alleviating visual morbid.”

About 50% of the out-patient department and 35% of the surgeries are done free of cost to the underprivileged. There are 27 operation theatres equipped with the latest equipment in our branches across India to enable the poor and indigent to receive the quality ophthalmic care they deserve. Over the last 40 odd years, over one million patients have been treated from all over India and Asia, earning the moniker of “mecca of eye care in Asia”.

Sankara Nethralaya also conducts screening camps at schools, eye camps for labourers, skilled and unskilled workers, and visits rural areas to screen remote populations. Patients can also walk into our community eye care facilities in Chennai and Kolkata for COST – FREE treatment.
