About

As the voice of global eye health, IAPB is the overarching alliance of nearly 300 eye health organisations in over 100 countries working together to eliminate avoidable sight loss and build a world where everyone has universal access to quality eye care.

More than 1 billion of us worldwide are living with sight loss that could be prevented or treated. Nine out of ten people living with sight loss live in low- or middle-income countries.

The consequences are far-reaching – unemployment, poor academic performance, mental ill health, social isolation, and increased risk of injury and illness. The global burden of poor eye health costs the global economy $411 billion annually, and 6.3 million years of schooling are lost each year.

We must make eye health part of everyday health care, everywhere. Most sight loss is preventable and treatable. Proven, cost-effective solutions are already available, like glasses or cataract operations. But without action, this crisis will worsen. By 2050, the number of people affected is expected to rise to 1.8 billion.

What IAPB does:

IAPB brings together nearly 300 organisations from over 100 countries, including eye health professionals, private and public eye health service providers, universities and charitable organisations to make eye care services available, accessible and affordable for all. As a global alliance, IAPB,

  • Advocates at a global and national level for the sector so eyecare receives the attention and resources needed.
  • Campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of eye health, engaging tens of millions of people around the world each year through our World Sight Day and its Love Your Eyes campaigns.
  • Connects hundreds of stakeholders through technical working groups and at our annual 2030 IN SIGHT LIVE event to foster innovation and promote partnerships.
  • Facilitates a culture of learning through tools such as the Vision Atlas to provide authoritative data and information, enabling access to up-to-date knowledge, information and practice, and drive data-informed advocacy and action.

By 2030 no-one should experience preventable or treatable sight loss, and everyone, everywhere should be able to access affordable eye care services. Click on to know more about the 2030 In Sight Stratgy
