MembershipFor India’s coastal communities, clear vision is a vital economic lifeline. For those whose livelihoods depend on navigating open waters and mending nets, uncorrected vision problems directly threaten safety, productivity and financial stability. Despite this need, cost and location often push comprehensive care out of reach. To bridge this gap, Project Drishyam—a joint initiative by the Optometry Confederation of India (OCI), Tangent India, and Aloka Vision Foundation is bringing comprehensive eye care directly to these underserved populations.
On January 25, 2026, the initiative conducted a full-scale eye care camp at Mahim Causeway Sulup, Mumbai. Moving beyond basic screenings, a team of six optometrists provided in-depth examinations to 84 beneficiaries. The process was rigorous, encompassing patient history, refraction, anterior and posterior segment evaluations and intraocular pressure measurements. This ensured that every diagnosis was accurate and tailored to the individual’s specific needs.
The impact was immediate. Over 53% (45) of beneficiaries were prescribed spectacles. Through the Aloka Vision Program, 34 reading glasses and 11 bifocals were provided free of cost. For those requiring advanced management, a formal referral system to Lotus Eye Hospital, Juhu, ensured a seamless transition to specialized treatment.
Ultimately, Project Drishyam reinforces the “Right to Sight” as a fundamental aspect of dignity. By integrating examination, correction and education, this partnership-driven model demonstrates a sustainable path toward making eye care accessible, equitable and life-changing for India’s occupational communities.
