Essentials in Action: 3 regional perspectives

In the midst of all advocacy wins from with the global organizations, IAPB launched 2030 Insight, for eyecare sector which ties up these advocacy milestones, while identifying the hurdles that we need to overcome to end avoidable sight loss by 2030. The next three videos from Advocacy to Action events of 2022 will help advocates gain insights to advocate for; elevating vision as a fundamental, economic, social and development issue, integrating eye health in wider health systems, and activating universal demand by influencing consumers and markets; the three key elements of the strategy.

Breaking down the silos – Beyond eyes and health in Latin AmericaBreaking down the silos – Beyond eyes and health in Latin America: discusses 2030 In Sight sector strategy and other recent global advocacy developments and further dwelled on the opportunities and actions that eye health advocates and organizations can embark on in the regions context.  The programme also showcased three examples from Guatemala, Bolivia, and Paraguay, presenting the importance and need for elevating vision as a fundamental, economic, social and development issue, integrating eye health in wider health systems, and activating universal demand by influencing consumers and markets: the three pillars of 2030 InSight.


Universal Health Coverage – Advocacy approaches for eye health:Universal Health Coverage – Advocacy approaches for eye health: The ASEAN Advocacy to Action event discusses opportunities, strategies, and actions to effectively advocate and drive change in government policy and practice to achieve eye care for everyone, everywhere by 2030.  Focusing on global and regional eye health policy environment, the programme tried to identify hooks to embed eye health within social, developmental, economic planning and policy at a national level. Experts and participants shared their views on advocacy actions and approaches that need to be prioritized for ASEAN region.  The event also includes presentations on WHO Guide for Action in health systems and Integrated People-centred Eye Care Advocacy to Action toolkit explaining how these resources can help countries implement Integrated People-centred Eye Care and advance towards Universal Health Coverage.


Universal Health Coverage – Advocacy approaches for eye health – AfricaUniversal Health Coverage – Advocacy approaches for eye health – Africa: The Africa Advocacy to Action event presents the need and the case for initiating dialogues with governments and stakeholders by advocates of eye health to set the 2030 In Sight strategic plan in action in the region. The discussions focus on approaches and needs to generate robust data and evidence to help targeted advocacy plans and interventions increasing equity in eyecare services and for its inclusion in Universal Health Coverage.  The expert panel further explores using evidence and its gaps as policy hooks for advocacy and how the global commitments on eye health, targets and indicators will help supplement the policy dialogues.
