Strengthening capacities and technical acumen on Diabetic Retinopathy

Date: Wednesday, 25 August 2021

Time: 14:00 IST GMT+5:30

Background and Objectives: There is a global epidemic of diabetes mellitus and diabetic retinopathy. The prevalence is high in low- and middle- income countries that have fewer resources in terms of infrastructure and the health workforce. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) estimates that the diabetic population in South East Asia would increase from 87 million in 2019 to 115 million in 2030, and retinopathy increase from 11.2% to 12.2% in the same period. Bangladesh, India, and Indonesia are likely to contribute significantly to this disease burden. A systematic planning in screening and treatment of diabetic eye disease including retinopathy would reduce this burden in the region.

Thrust Areas: The Webinar will familiarize the stakeholders with screening and operational guidelines recently developed by the South East Asia Diabetic Retinopathy Expert Group. Thrust will be given on the action-points required to be taken in the member states to promote the topic in question.

Expected Outcomes:

  1. At the end of the session, the audience will have a fair knowledge of DR screening and treatment in low- and middle- income countries with limited resources of infrastructure and health workforce.
  2. Better liasioning and networking between medical Internists and ophthalmologists leading to prevention and better management of diabetes as well as diabetic retinopathy.
  3. They would also be familiar with the newer technology and techniques used in diabetic retinopathy care.
  4. NCD network strengthened
