Cataract surgery in Les Cayes, Haiti/ Story: Vacancy: International Ophthalmology Fellow at NHS FifeNHS Fife is seeking an international ophthalmology fellow for 12 months. The purpose of the job is to develop general ophthalmic skills but in particular phacoemulsification proficiency.

This post is based at Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline, with a commitment to Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy.

You will join a well established team of 9 Consultant Ophthalmologists, 4 specialty trainees in ophthalmology and 2 associate specialists/specialty doctors who provide elective and emergency services in Fife.  The successful applicant will have a varied experience and exposure to a range of the subspecialties undertaken within NHS Fife.

You will participate in the provision of emergency services with our specialty registrars on week days until 5pm. It is envisaged that a limited number of overnight and weekend duties may be required, but the majority of these are provided by the ophthalmology trainee doctors.

The successful candidate will be supported to participate in research.

Ophthalmology in NHS Fife

NHS Fife serves a catchment area with a population of 380,000 with the post being based at the Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline. You will also be required to work at one of the other facilities used by NHS Fife at Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy, the Adamson Hospital in Cupar, and St Andrews Memorial Hospital.

The eye department provides out-patient clinics and elective surgery for adult and paediatric patients throughout Fife. Our consultants provide general ophthalmology services, as well as specialist care in medical retina, glaucoma, oculoplastics, cornea and external eye disease, paediatrics, uveitis and ocular motility.

Victoria Hospital is a modern well-equipped District General Hospital providing a wide range of services including General Surgery, Vascular, Trauma, and Renal Medicine.  There is a Day Surgery Unit, a 10 bedded Intensive Care Unit, 10 Surgical High Dependency and 5 Medical High Dependency beds.
