In October, 38 Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) staff members participated in two eye screening and communication events were conducted in Hai Duong and Tien Giang provinces to promote World Sight Day 2018. The theme for this year was “Eye Care Everywhere”. The event was arranged by The Fred Hollows Foundation Viet Nam Child Eye Care (VNCEC) Seeing is Believing Project.

In Hai Duong, the event, held at Hong Thai primary school (Ninh Giang district), attracted more than 300 students. Communication activities such as games, quizzes, and role plays were focused on the topic of child eye care. Various eye care messages were integrated into these activities, including “limit the time playing online games and using electronic devices”, “take a periodical eye check”, and “wearing spectacles appropriately”. After being entertained by a performance from the students, 24 SCB staff joined with teachers in cleaning the playground, planting flowers in the school garden, decorating the school library, presenting gifts to excellent students and supporting the medical team to conduct eye screening for 94 students. Ms Pham Nhu Anh, Head of Global Bank, Vice-General Director of SCB Vietnam, passed on the following message in her speech afer the event: “For those who do not have refractive error, pay good attention to your eye care! For those who already have it, remember to wear spectacles frequently!”.

In Tien Giang, a comprehensive eye examination was conducted for students in Thanh Tan primary school, located in one of the poorest district of this province. Nearly 400 students, teachers, parents and representatives from the local authority participated in this event. Mrs Huynh Thi Phuong, Vice-Director of Tien Giang Department of Education and Training said: (this event) “is very meaningful because it is not only bringing joy and support to poor students but is also helping to raise awareness of child eye care among the community.” Throughout the day, 14 SCB staff volunteered their time to support the medical team in comprehensive eye examinations, assist students with refractive error in choosing their preferred spectacles frame, and joining students and teachers in communication activities such as quizzes and fun games. These communication activities were designed to be fun and interesting while widely promoting the message of child eye care.
