IAPB member, Vision for a Nation Foundation (VFAN), is ending the year with plans to scale up their work in Ghana, following the footsteps of their success in Rwanda.

The award-winning UK charity supported Rwanda’s Ministry of Health to successfully build an affordable nationwide eye care service that is now locally available to all the nation’s 10.5 million people and was fully integrated into the public health system by 2018.

Since then, they have been working with the Ghana Health Service to ensure Primary Eye Care services are accessible to everyone across the country. Beginning in health facilities and schools in the Upper Eastern and Central regions of Ghana, during 2019 and early 2020, VFAN trained 80 nurses in Primary Eye Care, who then when on to screen 60,000 school aged children.

However, with schools still closed across the country until the new year, VFAN, along with many other organisations, will be facing rising costs to keep children and staff safe due to the additional needs brought about by Covid -19.

As such, VFAN has launched an end of year appeal – which is offering those who donate the chance to win prizes provided by their corporate partners – to boost support for their plans in Ghana in 2021 and beyond.

The organisation plans to expand its existing Primary Eye Care programmes in both schools and community health facilities across the Central and Upper Eastern Regions of Ghana next year.
