Workshop on Post-Disaster management in Nepal

Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh (NNJS) an IAPB member, organized a one-day workshop on “Post Disaster: Long term strategy and Action Plan in Eye health Service of Nepal”. The workshop, with support from IAPB and CBM, was held in Kathmandu, Nepal. Over all 60 participants from Eye Care Institutions, Ministry of Health, National Planning Commission, INGOs like the Fred Hollows Foundation, Seva Foundation, Norwegian Association for Blind and Partially Sighted (NABP), CBM, USAID, Nepal Engineers’ consultancy, Institute of Medicine, WHO, National Disaster Authority of Nepal, Nepal Red Cross Society, National Academy of Science and Technology of Nepal.

The main objective of the workshop was to assess the over-all damage in eye institutions after the earth quake, prepare a long-term strategy to tackle the existing situation in eye health and ensure that eye care institutions are aware of the importance of long-term disaster preparedness and developing a response strategy for eye hospitals.

The workshop concluded with the recommendation to conduct structural assessments of existing eye care institutions and the rehabilitation sector such as schools for the blind. Another key recommendation was to form a task force/national coordinating committee. The committee will prepare national policy guidelines and a strategic plan for national disaster management for eye care institutions, monitor and report the progress.
