MembershipSankara Eye Foundation India: 50 Years of Restoring Sight and Transforming Lives
From a humble vision in 1977 to a nationwide movement delivering compassionate eye care to millions
For Ponnusamy, a 63-year-old tea estate labourer from the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, life had slowly turned into a struggle. Working long hours in the forested estates, his livelihood depended entirely on his ability to see clearly. But as his vision deteriorated, everyday tasks became uncertain, and the risk of losing his independence felt real.
Like many in remote communities, Ponnusamy believed his worsening vision was something he had to live with. Access to care seemed distant – both physically and financially.
Everything changed when a Sankara community outreach camp reached his village. For the first time, he was screened and assured that his vision could be restored. He was brought to Sankara Eye Hospital, Coimbatore, where he underwent surgery under the “Gift of Vision” program.
The moment his eye patch was removed marked a turning point. As light returned, so did his confidence. He could once again see the world around him—the green hills he worked in, the faces of his family, and most importantly, a future where he could live independently.
For Ponnusamy, it was not just a medical procedure—it was the restoration of dignity, livelihood, and hope.
His story captures the true essence of Sankara Eye Foundation India’s mission: bringing the gift of vision to those who need it most.
In May 2026, Sankara Eye Foundation India marked 50 years of dedicated service in eye care—a journey that began in 1977 when Dr. R. V. Ramani and Dr. Radha Ramani set out with a simple yet powerful purpose: to ensure that no one is denied the gift of vision due to lack of access or affordability.
What started as a noble initiative has today evolved into one of India’s largest community-focused eye care movements.
Over five decades, this vision has grown into a strong network of 14 hospitals across 10 states, supported by more than 50 Vision Centres and a committed workforce of over 4,000 employees. This growth reflects not only geographic expansion but also the ability to deliver high-quality, affordable, and accessible eye care at scale.
The impact of this work is measured in lives transformed. Since its inception, Sankara has performed over 3.1 million free surgeries and screened over 8 million individuals through outreach camps. Behind every number lies a story like Ponnusamy’s —a story of restored sight, renewed confidence, and a better quality of life.
A defining strength of Sankara’s journey has been its focus on reaching those who are often left behind. Complementing its hospital network, Sankara’s AI-enabled Vision Centres serve as a vital link between communities and base hospitals, providing primary eye care, early diagnosis, counselling, and seamless referrals for advanced treatment. By bringing quality eye care closer to people’s homes, they help overcome barriers of accessibility, awareness, and affordability.
This journey has been made possible by the dedication of its people. Across hospitals, outreach programs, and Vision Centres, teams are driven by a shared belief that serving the community is both their responsibility and their strength. Their commitment to compassion and quality continues to define the organisation’s work.

While this milestone marks a moment of achievement, it also reinforces the responsibility ahead. Millions across India still lack access to timely eye care, making our mission as relevant today as it was five decades ago.
Fifty years ago, a compassionate vision set this journey in motion. Today, it stands as a powerful movement—restoring sight, empowering communities, and transforming lives.
And the journey continues.
