Healthy vision is critical to our physical health, mental health, and well-being. Vision impairment can lead to injuries but also to poor general health through reduced access to healthcare, limitations in physical activity and increased social isolation. As a result, it creates an increased burden on wider health systems and society at large – a burden that is avoidable. Eye health services are vital and part of the quality essential health-care services that should form part of every country’s journey towards achieving SDG Target 3.8 on Universal Health Coverage. Strengthening the delivery of eye care within Universal Health Coverage has the potential to improve the lives of millions of people globally and unlock human potential.
