Ensuring long-term economic growth requires unlocking the full potential of the people directly involved. Over 90% of all sight loss is avoidable with early access to care. By increasing employee access to eye health services, workers around the world will gain more working years, increase personal earning potential by 5%, increase productivity of the working poor by 20 – 30% and improve independence, mobility and overall quality of life. Employers will also realize improved productivity, less absenteeism, and increased retention. If vision is corrected prior to adulthood, educational outcomes improve, and literacy rates increase. When the level of education increases, the informal economy decreases, gender equality is advanced, future generations of workers are poised to find and remain in gainful employment, and global sustainable development is more assured.
