2019 Year-end Wrap: Korea

This will be remembered as the year when the Korean members of IAPB joined the ranks of  the regional leaders in eye health. Aside from Australia, Korea now has more members than any country in the Western Pacific; members who are active right across the region and beyond.

World Report on Vision Launch in Seoul

Dr Andreas Mueller from the World Health Organization was in Seoul on the 6^th of December to launch the World Report on Vision in Korea. This important document is the first WHO report on vision and the singular most important advocacy document for eye health for the next decade. It’s a testimony to the hard work of the Korean Eye Care Working Group that the Korean launch at Yonsei University, was the country launch worldwide – the Philippines, where WHO Westpac office is located was first and then Australia. Speakers addressed the disparity in eye health coverage amongst minorities and women and the importance of renewed advocacy efforts to raise profile in Korea. One of the aims of the World Report on Vision is to reach beyond the eye health sector. This was a huge success in Seoul: with only one panelist from eye sector, but many from complimentary sectors such as education. The Korea launch format is now being used as a global blue-print.

Dr Sangchul Yoon nominated as GA Ambassador

Dr Sangchul Yoon from KOS and Project BOM has been appointed a GA Ambassador for the IAPB Global Assembly in 2020. On the GA, Dr Yoon writes – Since I started my career in the field of public eye health, IAPB GAs and CoMs have been useful source of ideas for the activities of Project BOM. 

Moreover, I value the significance of working together. Attending GAs and CoMs is a great chance to meet and network with fellow eye health professionals exchanging knowledge and experience making sure we are headed to the same direction. GA 2020 will be the best version of gathering of eye health professionals for sure. 

Two-Hundred People attend Korean Lunch at Council of Members

This year the IAPB Council of Members was held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s largest city. In keeping with the theme of diversity, members of the Korean Eye Care Working Group were invited to host a lunch on the first day of CoM. Project BOM, LabSD and Braillist took up the challenge – over two hundred guests from all over the world attended to hear about the latest in Korean innovation and projects. As they feasted on the Korean infused menu, attendees learnt about the ways in which Korean technology can improve the eye health outcomes in countries across Africa. One of the best attended sessions of the entire Council. Clearly, delegates are interested in Korea and Korean projects!

GA2020

Look out for abstract submission period in early 2020 – the submission period will be between January and March. We are expecting a good number of delegates from Korea and partner projects.

2019년 대한민국의 안보건 돌아보기

2019년은 세계실명예방기구(IAPB)의 한국 회원기관들이 지역 내 안보건 분야 리더로서 자리매김한 한해로 기억될 것입니다. 한국은 IAPB서태평양지부에서 호주 다음으로 많은 회원기관을 보유하고 있으며, 이들은 서태평양 지역과 그 외의 지역에서도 왕성히 활동 중에 있습니다.

 “세계비전보고서 (World Report on Vision) Launch” 서울 선포식  

 지난 12월 6일 세계보건기구 (WHO)와 세계실명예방기구는 함께 세계비전보고서의 선포를 위해 한국을 방문하였습니다. 이 문서는 실명과 관련한 WHO의 첫 보고서이자, 차후 10년간 안보건 분야의 옹호 활동(Advocacy)의 가장 기본틀이 될 내용입니다.

연세대학교 백양누리 글로벌라운지에서 선포된 세계비전보고서는, WHO서태평양지부 사무소가 위치한 필리핀과 호주에 이어 세번째로 이뤄졌습니다. 이것은 그간 한국 안보건협의체 (Korea Eye Care Working Group) 회원 단체들이 세계 안보건의 발전을 위해 기울인 노력의 결과라 할 수 있습니다.

본 행사에는 다양한 사회 분야의 전문가들이 패널로 참석하였습니다. 교육, 젠더, 사회혁신 등 여러 분야 전문가들이 각자의 분야가 안보건과 어떻게 협력이 가능한지와 그 협력의 영향력에 대해 함께 이야기 하였습니다특히, 소수자와 여성에 있어 안보건 격차를 깊이 논의 하였으며 한국에서의 안보건 인지도를 증진시키기 위한 새로운 옹호활동과 관련한 노력에 대해 강조 하였습니다. 세계비전보고서의 가장 중요한 지향점은 안보건 분야를 위한 사회 여러 분야의 협력이라는 점을 볼 때, 서울에서의 행사는 매우 성공적이었습니다. 서울에서의 패널 구성은 앞으로 타 국가의 세계비전보고서 선포식의  기본틀이 될 것입니다.

윤상철 교수의 GA Ambassador로 임명

대한안과학회와 Project BOM의 윤상철 교수가 IAPB GA Ambassador로 임명되었습니다. 윤상철 교수는 임명소감으로 다음과 같이 전했습니다. “안보건분야에서 일하기 시작한 후 부터 국제실명예방기구의 일반총회 (General Assembly: GA)와 연차총회(Council of Members: CoM)는 늘 Project BOM의 활동에 있어 영감의 근원이었습니다. 더불어,  GA와 COM 참가는 안보건 분야의 동료전문가들을 만나 지식과 경험을 공유하고, 우리가 함께 옳은 방향으로 함께 가고 있다는 사실을 확인할 수 있는 좋은 기회입니다. GA2020(Global Assembly 2020)*은 안보건 전문가들이 교류할수 있는 최고의 기회가 될 것임을 확신합니다. “

연차총회 (Council of Members:CoM) 한국오찬

올해 IAPB CoM은 탄자니아의 최대 도시인 다르에스살람에서 개최되었습니다. 다양성이라는 테마에 입각하여, 한국안보건협의체의 회원기관들은 CoM 첫날 오찬 행사를 개최하였습니다. Project BOM, LabSD, Braillist가 주최였으며, 이 날 200명이 넘는 회원기관 전문가들이 한국의 혁신기술과 프로젝트에 대해 알아보기 위해 전 세계에서 참석하였습니다. 참석자들은 이날 한국 음식을 오찬으로 즐기며 한국의 기술과 개도국의 안보건의 조화가 끌어낼 변화를 함께 이야기 하며 즐거운 시간을 가졌습니다. 이는 연차총회에서 가장 많은 인원이 참석한 행사였으며, 참석자들은 한국과 한국 기관들의  안보건 사업에 많은 관심을 보였습니다.

2020년 초 GA2020초록접수가 있으니 확인해주세요. 접수기간은 1월에 시작하여 3월에 마감됩니다. 한국과 관련  프로젝트에서 많은 참여가 있기를 기대합니다.
