Dr Ian Tan

Ian Tan has shown a keen and dedicated interest in developing world eye health care since he was a medical student. As a final year undergraduate at the University of Adelaide, he self-funded a position on Sight For All’s Vientiane Eye Survey in Laos. Ian was an instrumental team member, collecting and analysing eye health data in this population.

Ian later displayed great tenacity and commitment in analysing the large amount of data that had been collected. He subsequently was the principal author on the most important paper from this survey which details the prevalence and causes of visual impairment in this population.

In addition to his epidemiological work, Ian has been a dedicated contributor at Sight For All functions, assisting with fund raising and eye health promotion. Ian displays excellent leadership qualities, particularly integrity and honesty and he has excellent interpersonal skills. He remains a dedicated student of ophthalmology and constantly strives to improve his knowledge. He was recently selected as a new Ophthalmology Registrar and is on a pathway to become an outstanding young eye doctor. He is definitely on a stellar trajectory and is a clear rising star in the field of universal eye care.
